Dandruff is nothing but a cluster of very cohesive corneocytes (a complex protein). The three main causes of dandruff are skin oil (sebum), metabolic by-products of skin microbes (mainly Malassezia yeast) and individual hygiene, susceptibility and allergy sensitivity. Though dandruff is a very common problem, it can cause irritation, social and self-esteem problem. Sometimes the dandruff problem becomes so serious that even after visiting Dermatologist the problem gets worse than before in its occurrence. Fenugreek Seeds (Methi)

In one cup water soak one teaspoon of fenugreek seed overnight. Next morning strain the water and apply it on your scalp. The used fenugreek seeds can be grind and the paste can be applied on your hairs mixing with hair oil. This remedy also boosts hair growth.

Use of Fenugreek

Make a mixture of vinegar and water in 1:3 ratio. Apply half of the mixture on the scalp keeps it overnight. Next morning rinse the applied mixture with the remaining half mixture. Start doing it once in a week and then in the interval of two weeks.

Oil Massage

Oil massage is anti-bacterial and improves blood circulation to the scalp. Massage scalp with warm Sesame oil or Olive oil and keep it overnight. Next morning squeeze a little lime juice and apply on the scalp. After one hour, rinse with Shikakai Also weekly massage of castor oil, sesame oil and coconut oil all in equal quantity applied warm in scalp help reduce dandruff. Warm up three teaspoons of hair oil, then add half teaspoon of lemon juice and mix well. Massage on the scalp, rinse and wash after 5mins. This massage reduces dandruff and itchiness.

Indian Lilac (Neem)

The Neem is a vital part of Ayurvedic treatment. It said to have anti-fungal, anti-biotic, antiseptic and anti-bacterial properties. Soak about two handfuls of neem leaves in five cups of hot water overnight. Next morning strain the water and rinse your hairs with it. The used leaves can grind and crushed leaves can be applied to the scalp. Leave the paste on the scalp for a few hours, then wash it off with Shikakai. Or after rinsing hairs with neem water, rub coconut oil and lemon juice mixture on the scalp and wash after two hours.

Indian Gooseberry (Amla)

Amla is an important ingredient of hair cosmetics. It has anti-bacterial properties and is very effective as an anti-dandruff agent. It is good hair-conditioner and gives hairs a natural shine. Mix little Amla in water or grind dry Amla with water, add two teaspoons of lemon juice in it. Apply on scalp for half an hour, then rinse it with water. Make a paste of amla powder with water. Make another paste of ten to fifteen Basil leaves with water, add both pastes. Apply the paste on scalp for half an hour, then wash it off.

Gooseberry Infusion

Eggs have active proteins and anti-bacterial properties. Take two egg yolks, beat it well and add one teaspoon of lemon in it. Apply this mixture on the scalp. Keep it for thirty to forty-five minutes for best result. Rinse and wash properly with mild shampoo and apply conditioner. Only plain egg yolk can be applied for the same period of time and can be washed similarly. Egg not only help to remove dandruff but also make the hairs silky smooth and give hairs natural shine.


Curd has anti-bacterial property. Make a smooth paste of curd by whipping. Apply the paste on wet scalp for one hour for best results. Wash hairs very thoroughly to avoid over-smell of curd. It is one of the most effective home remedy for dandruff. Mix two teaspoons of grind black pepper in a small bowl of whipped curd and apply the mixture on the scalp only. Care must be taken that the mixture doesn’t get applied to the hairs. Keep it for an hour, rinse it thoroughly afterwards. Curd too helps to smooth hair texture and its shine.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera has fungicidal, bacterial and exfoliating properties. Take Aloe vera gel from its leaves as much required and apply it on your scalp and keep it for about twenty minutes. Later wash thoroughly, improper cleaning may aggress the problem of dandruff.

Henna, is used as hair cosmetic for beautiful, silky smooth, shiny hairs for ages now. Henna makes the roots of hairs strong and have cooling properties and prevent oiliness in hairs thus put curbs on the growth of dandruff. Henna, Amla and tea powder all taken in almost equal amount, add the appropriate amount of lemon juice and a little water to make a paste. Apply this paste on your scalp. Wash it off after an hour. Regular use of Henna is good to keep hairs conditioned and maintain its health.

White Vinegar

White vinegar is a regular vinegar we usually have at home. It contains acetic acid that is anti-fungal in nature and help to reduce scalp itching due to dandruff. A half cup of vinegar, add two cups of water and apply on the scalp after shampooing. Take white vinegar, olive oil and water in the ratio of 2:1:3 apply on scalp for ten minutes and wash hairs nicely with shampoo.

Ginger has anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-oxidant, anti-parasitic and anti-inflammatory properties. It not only soothes itching due to dandruff but also prevent dandruff and promotes good health of hairs. Squeeze oil from ginger, add some sesame oil in it. Massage your scalp with the mixture, after few minute rinses it off with shampoo.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is anti-fungal, mild exfoliate. Apply a handful of baking soda on wet scalp, keep it for a few minutes and rinse it well with warm water. To get best results, repeat the same procedure twice or thrice a week.
