Porsche is all set to give a tough fight to its rivals in the sports car market with new 918 Spyder high-performance concept sports car. The company announced that it is pleased with the preliminary results of the driving trials of 918 Spyder. The results are in line with Porsche expectations.
The new launch will also help Porsche to boost up competence in hybrid technology. The 918 Spyder is a two-seater mid-engined sports car with plug-in hybrid. According to market share statistics related to sports cars segment sold in the US during last year, Porsche 911 hit the second place with 13% market share.
The company sold 6,016 units of Porsche 911. The top place was occupied by Chevrolet Corvette with 28% of market share. The company sold 13,164 units of Corvettes. These statistics motivates Porsche to move ahead and grab the place it lost in the luxury sports car category.
Porsche announced that the project to develop 918 Spyder is moving as per plans. The company will start production of 918 Spyder in September next year. If things move on correctly, owners will start receiving their booked cars before the end of 2013.
Features Of 2014 Porsche 918 Spyder
The high-performance concept sports car is equipped with mid-mounted gasoline V8 combustion engine. It also features two electric motors – of which one supports the front wheels and one helps in driving the rear wheels. The V8 engine is already successfully used in the RS Spyder racing car.
Being a sports car, the 918 Spyder has a lightweight body structure. The exterior and monocoque bodyshell is manufactured from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFP). Porsche has also taken care to sustain light weight by using magnesium and aluminium in best possible manner.
Along with the aerodynamic function, manufacturers of 918 Spyder have taken due care to incorporate retractable air intakes with a ram air function. The sports car features two contoured sports bucket seats for driver and passenger. Driver can keep an eye on road speed, engine speed and energy management with the three free-standing circular dials provided in the front.
A map switch provided in the front allows the driver to call up a variety of drive programs. When driver is speeding in the car and overtakes, a map switch also works as the push-to-pass button for E-boosting. The sports car also has Range Manager in the Center Display. With the help of Range Manager, the driver can keep an eye on how much distance he is yet to cross. Accordingly, the driver can use suitable choice of power and performance.
Porsche claims that 918 Spyder’s power output will exceed 770 hp, while fuel consumption will strike 74 mpg. When in use, the 918 Spyder emits only 70 grams CO2 per kilometer. It consumes three litres of fuel to drive 100 kilometres i.e. equal to 94 mpg imp.
The new sports car also features a fluid-cooled lithium-ion battery, which is placed behind the passenger cell. With the hybrid-battery system, the user can charge the battery on the regular electrical network.
Price Of 2014 Porsche 918 Spyder
The 918 Spyder will begin production in the beginning of 2013, and should be available for delivery by late 2013 or early 2014. Expect the car to cost somewhere around $850,000.
