Dessert wines as their name suggest, are the sweet wines and prepared by the residual sugar which is left out in wine making process.

Rose Wines

Rose wines are very light and refreshing and most suitable for outdoor use. These wines are prepared from the red grapes varietal, but neither they are of red color nor white in color, instead  have a very little reddish tinge and that’s why they are also called Blush wines .

The varietals used  to prepare  rose wines as solo or in a blend are Pinot Noir, Syrah, Grenache and few more.

Sparkling Wines

Sparkling wines are the celebration wines, with a little but strong effervescences. They are bubbly , lovely  and lively and have nose tickling character .These wines are mildly sweet to dry in taste.

Fortified Wines

Fortified wines are those that are produced by adding extra alcohol during their making process to give an extra kick .The fortified wines are of both ,sweet and dry  style. The most famous fortified wines are port and sherry.Some other fortified wines are Madeira, Marsala  and  Vin Doux Naturel.

To prepare Port ,  brandy is added at the time of fermentation, during the wine making process. This results  in  a wine that is quite high in alcohol percent, thick and sweet. Touuriga  Nacional  is the dominating and mostly widely  used  grape varietal in making Port wines.

There are two types of port named Ruby and Tawny.

Ruby ports  are bottled  and sold immediately after preparing ,as they don’t need aging . It is of bright ruby color, fruity and spicy in taste. Ruby ports are sub categorized as Single Quinta, when all the grapes used to prepare belongs to a  single vineyard and of single year and Vintage ,when they are made in a particular year and bottled after two or more years of aging.  Vintage ports are the most juicy and fruity in taste, warm in  nature  and silky in texture . When sealed , vintage Ruby port  have a very long shelf life .

Tawny ports are aged in casks for years .These wines due to their exposure to oxygen present in  air turns tawny color. They are more sophisticated then rubies and are categorized as Aged tawnies and  Colheita. Aged tawnies are  kept in casks for a minimum period of six years before bottling. They have very specific taste, flavor and character.

The wines with a year specific  vintage are named  Colhita .They have more to offer when compared with aged tawnies.

Sherry

Sherry is also a fortified wine,  mostly produced in Spain. In the process of manufacturing sherry, grape sprit is added at the time when grape juice is fully fermented. It is mostly made from the Palomino varietal of grape.

There are many varieties of Sherry. Fino is pale colored, tangy in taste  ,dry wine while  Olorosso is of dark color and has a distinctively nutty character. Manzanilla is a crunchy and light wine and  should be consumed young and chilled . Pedro Ximenez is a  rich and thick Sherry,which in combination with ice cream is  a killer . Amontillado and Cream are other two variants

Varietal Wines

if only one variety of grape is used fully or it dominates  in making of the wine  and it is mentioned on the label, then the wine produced is called  varietal and is named after the grape .Varietal wines  taste depends upon the grapes varietal used to make them.

Both the red  and wines comes in different varietials and blends.

Varietals of Red wine

Named due to their color, red wines are made from the red grapes . These are the wines that are produced  almost everywhere in the world. Some varietals of red wine are Cabernet Sauvignon,  Malbec , Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah (Shiraz), Zinfandel and  Cabernet Sauvignon.

Merlot is known as introducing wine for new users .It has a very tender and fruity flavor. For new users it is the best wine,  because  it is an easy going wine.

White wines are made from the white grapes varieties. Some times white wines are made from the red grapes. In this process the skin of the grapes is not brought in  contact with the grape juice. The white wines are of all taste, dry to sweet. Like red wines ,white wines also come in various varietals and blends.

The varietals of white wine are Chardonnay, Pinot gris, Riesling,colombard Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurztraminer, viogneir  and Rose wines.

The  wines made from more than one type of grapes  are called blended wines . For this class of wines the region of origin of grapes  is much important than the  varietals  of grape.

Blends of Red wines

Few common blends of red wines are Bordeaux Blends (Claret), Chianti, Rhône Blends, Rioja and Valpolicella Blends.

Blends of White wines
