In 2012, BMW makes a stronger statement with 2012 BMW M550d xDrive that is powered by 6-cylinder diesel engine and is based on 4-wheel-drive system. BMW has given the new BMW M550d xDrive a performance and look hike in comparison to the other M Sport models that focus mainly on suspension and bodykit.

However, BMW M550d xDrive does not match up to the performance level of full M cars. So, what is the point after all in engraving the M badge on a diesel car? It is simple. Design

2012 BMW M550d xDrive bridges the gap between regular BMW cars such as the BMW 535d and the sorts of BMW M5 that are designated as real M cars. 2012 BMW M550d xDrive borrows heavily from the BMW M5 and hence sports similar rear lip spoiler, gaping front bumper and aluminum cabin trim. Also, 2012 BMW M550d xDrive is around 220 pounds lighter to the real M5.

Engine

2012 BMW M550d xDrive is powered by a 3L diesel engine that is also found in BMW 530d and 550d. However, not many parts are shared. Nevertheless, the engine of BMW M550d xDrive sports three turbochargers. The smaller blower kicks the car from idle state and from 1500rpm the second blower joins in.

At 2700rpm, the third super responsive turbo with variable geometry comes into action. The engine renders as high as 375 horsepower and 546 lb-ft of torque. This means that BMW M550d xDrive sets the mood right from the beginning and the transition from lower revs to higher revs is pretty smooth. But it fails to set in the drama that the M5 is capable of.

On performance level, the 2012 BMW M550d xDrive is at par with any real M5 car. It touches the 62mph mark in just 4.7 seconds, which is just 0.3 seconds more than that of the M5. But it is much better than the 5.5 seconds taken by 535d.

Fuel Economy

In terms of fuel economy, the BMW M550d xDrive achieves 44mpg against 52mpg of BMW 535d. However, the fuel economy figure is better than that of the M5 (29mpg).

In Sport mode, BMW M550d xDrive makes a satiating sound – somewhat similar to that of a V8 engine. This could be possible because BMW M550d xDrive uses insulation materials that also account for V8-like frequencies. The four-wheel-drive system is a dream come true. The front wheels come into action when it is most needed. Four-wheel-drive system renders a composed and light yet tight feel. Handling is also incredible because of the use of uprated suspension and stiff brakes. All these attributes simplify the process of propelling the almost 2-tonned beast.

BMW M550d xDrive is a step below the M5 enigma. Hence, drivers looking for an M5-like experience in 2012 BMW M550d xDrive will be despaired. It fairs better than the M5 in only one area i.e. fuel economy. So, the £67k worth BMW M550d xDrive might not look as much a good value for money as the BMW 535d does at $75925.09.
