Canon has improved upon its earlier ultracompact, the PowerShot SD1400 IS (IXUS 130/ IXY 400F) and launched the PowerShot ELPH 300 HS. It is also known as the IXUS 220HS in Europe and the rest of the world. It maintains the sleek styling of its predecessor and this time it has come with quite a number of improved and new features.

The Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS features a 5x zoom which can give you wide shots equivalent to 24mm to tele-shots equivalent to 120mm of 35mm format. This means that you not only get great family shots but also great vacation photos.
The macro mode takes you up to 3cm of the subject. That means you will not have to miss even the smallest flower. You get all this in a camera that measures just 92x56x20mm and weighs only 141 grams and fits in your shirt pocket.
The camera offers only shooting in auto mode and has no provision for manual shooting. It does not even have aperture or shutter priority. But it features two options in auto mode, Smart Auto and flexible auto. The AUTO button actually indicates smart auto where the camera selects the best setting from 32 variables.
This function also includes the improved I-Contrast and the Smart Flash Exposure for giving better details in the high contrast areas of photographs. Smart shutter option in the camera can detect smile to operate.
Wink self shutter allows you to operate the shutter with a wink and the face self shutter shoots only when a new face enters the frame. The camera also features continuous shooting at 3.4 shots per second and in high speed bursts till the memory card is full.
Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS supports Full HD movie recording (1920×1080) at 24 fps. However, in Full HD option you can only record only 10 minute clips at a stretch.
It also supports 1280×720, 640×480 and 320×240 at 30fps. In the later two resolutions you can record super slow motion movie. Movie is recorded in MOV files with stereo sound.
Canon HS System
This is a relatively new introduction from the house of Canon and has been launched only last year. This allows special image processing for low light conditions by suppressing noise in the picture and eliminating the need for flash. The result is you get more details and better color rendition.

The Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS features a 12 megapixel 1/2.3 inch backlit CMOS sensor. Together with the DIGIC 4 processor featuring an iSAPS technology, the camera gives quite a sensational image quality. With the HS system It gives relatively noiseless pictures even at higher ISO settings.
