Sore throat is a common occurrence in people of all age groups. It is caused due to inflammation of the pharynx. Sore throat is a kind of allergy that may be caused by changing weather conditions, eating too cold or sour and spicy food. Sore throat can be painful and you may feel difficulty in speaking and swallowing solid food.
Sore throat is not a serious problem and can be effectively and easily treated at home with simple remedies. Recurring attacks of sore throat infection should not be taken lightly and you must consult a doctor to know the under lying cause of infection.
Effective Home Remedies for Sore Throat
Gargles for Sore Throat
Gargles bring immediate relief in sore throat condition. It is soothing and relieves pain in the throat. Heat a glass of water and add ¼ tea spoon salt in it. Stir till salt is completely dissolved. Use this saline water twice a day for gargle.
Boil green tea leaves in one glass of water. Cover and let it rest for 2-3 minutes. Add a pinch of salt and strain the tea. Use it for gargle to give relief to sore throat.
Take 1 tea spoon fenugreek seeds and boil them in one litre of water. Simmer it for 3- 4 minutes. Strain and use for gargling. Fenugreek has immense anti inflammatory properties, thus it is an effective remedy for sore throat.
Ginger for Sore Throat
Ginger is an anti septic, antibiotic and anti allergy herb. It is widely used in herbal therapy to treat various ailments. Grate 1/2inch piece of ginger and pass it through a sieve to obtain its juice. Mix ½ tea spoon ginger juice with 1 tea spoon honey and take it twice a day to relieve irritation and pain in sore throat.
You can make a decoction with ½ tea spoon grated ginger and ½ tea spoon cinnamon powder. Boil the two in a glass of water for 3-4 minutes on low heat. Strain and sip while still hot.
Turmeric is a natural anti septic and antibiotic herb. It is used to treat sore throat in various ways. Mix ¼ tea spoon turmeric powder with ½ tea spoon honey and take the mixture twice a day.
Do not eat or drink anything for half an hour after eating the mixture. It has a soothing effect on the throat and gives relief from pain and cough.
Take a fresh betel leaf; put one almond, one clove and ½ tea spoon mishri in it. Roll the leaf and chew it slowly while swallowing the juice. The juice obtained from the ingredients soothes sore throat and gives relief from pain and cough.
Take 100 grams jaggery, 1 tea spoon dry ginger powder (sonth) and ½ tea spoon black pepper powder. Mix it and divide the mixture in four doses. Take it four times during the day to treat sore throat.
Fresh and dry dates (chuhara) are effective home remedies for sore throat. Boil one deseeded dry date or two-three deseeded fresh dates in one glass of milk and drink it while hot.
It relieves pain in the throat and reduces swelling to help you to swallow food easily.
