Muscle pain happens when you overuse a muscle by over stretching or straining it beyond its normal capacity. If you have not been exercising for a long period of time and suddenly you start performing rigorous exercises without warming up, you are sure to experience a sprained and strained muscle. Strained muscles can cause a lot of pain and discomfort.
Muscle cramp is also a part of muscle strain which many people experience while bending, playing a sport or even when sitting or standing in one position for prolonged period of time. You may suffer from muscular pains due to viral infection. Any kind of muscle pain should not be ignored.
Over the counter pain killers or injections give only temporary relief and can cause damage to the immune system. You should treat common muscle pain with simple home remedies, that are cost effective and do not cause any side effects.
Home Remedies for Muscle Pain
The first step to relieve muscle pain is to take rest. Do not start moving immediately after a muscle cramp or a muscle sprain. It can aggravate the pain. Rest for some time and then take adequate measure to cure muscle pain.
Take ½ tea spoon each of coriander seeds, cumin seeds and carom (Ajwain) seeds. Boil them in one litre water for 5-7 minutes. Strain and drink the decoction two to three times a day to relieve muscle pain.
Do light stretching exercises like toe touching, sideways bending, waist twisting and neck and shoulder exercisesto treat sore muscles. Stretching exercises help to release muscle tension and it eases the pain. Do yoga stretching exercises and hold each position for at least 20 seconds for muscle pain relief.
Hot and cold fermentation is an effective home remedy for muscle pain. For cold compress, take a few ice cubes and wrap them in muslin. Press it on affected area for as long as you can bear. Do it for at least 5 minutes. Afterwards gently massage the area to relieve muscle pain. Repeat the fermentation morning and evening.
For hot water fermentation, take hot water in a vessel and add 1 tea spoon Epsom salt in it. Soak a towel in the water, squeeze out excess water and place the towel on affected area. When the towel gets cold, again soak it in water and repeat the process for 10 minutes. Afterwards cover the area with a thick cloth to prevent exposure.
Whenever you feel sudden muscle pain, your heart beat also increases due to stress on the muscle. Deep breathing helps to slow down the heart beat and it reduces stress from the muscle. Inhale from your nostrils to your full lung capacity. Hold for 3 seconds and exhale from the mouth. It will relieve muscle tension and will also divert your mind from pain.
Hot oil massage improves blood circulation and it eases muscle tightness. Coconut oil, mustard oil or castor oil are beneficial for muscle pain. Gently massage the affected area with warm oil and wrap crepe bandage over it for instant relief in muscle pain.
