How To Become A LawyerA career in law can be very challenging and is also highly rewarding. It is one of the more difficult professions to build your career in and require ample time to be devoted towards studies and experience. You will also need to face some tough competition. For being a lawyer in the USA you need to take these following steps.

How To Become A Lawyer

During your High School and College Years

You can develop your communication, reading and comprehension skills and can also work towards developing better studying habits.

You can be a part of the mock trial teams and can also participate in the debates that are held during your high school years. By doing so you will be able to develop the essential skills that those are necessary for being an advocate.

Get the Undergraduate Degree

You should also get an undergraduate degree which is a prerequisite for getting admission in the law school. It is also essential that you maintain a minimum score of 3.0 GPA as most of the law schools will require this. The colleges do not take into consideration your major subject of undergraduation and hence choosing a very difficult subject is of not any special significance for getting admission in the law school.

A difficult major may also dampen the chances of getting the 3.0.gpa score. There is an exception also if one is interested in intellectual property law. You will require a degree in subjects like mathematics or in technical science (in subjects like computer science, electrical engineering, chemistry, biology etc.) for doing it. You will also require the letter of recommendation from professor and therefore you can get familiar with them.

Apply for the Law School

The LSAT is the half day standardized admission test which you can take for being admitted to the ABA approved law schools, many non approved ABA schools and many of the Canadian schools. The law schools can use the test for accessing the applicant’s acquired verbal and reading reasoning skills.

This test is conducted at several locations 4 times a year. You can also take some preparation course for getting better prepared for the exam. Some law schools place the LSAT score at a higher level than the GPA score and hence you must take the test very seriously. You can also receive the financial aid if you do better in the LSAT exam. The score of 180 is considered good.

Apply to many ABA Accredited Law Schools

You can apply to the American Bar Association accredited law schools. They can be categorized into the wish schools i.e. the schools you want to take admission into but are too competitive for your credentials, the middle of the road schools who have students having similar educational credentials and the safety schools which are the schools you can opt for if you do not get admission in he more high ranking schools.

You can also view the ranking of the law schools which is given by the U.S. new and world report. You can find that the application fees are a bit on the higher side in some cases.

Save Money

Many of the respected and full time programs imparted in law schools do not allow the students to work in their first year of studies. You may be allowed to do so in some cases but will be advised against as the law programs in-itself are a full time job.

You should also devote some time towards case readings, writing the detailed briefs, researching the law cases and preparing for the question answer sessions of the class. You can also join your batch mates in a study group.

Experience

You can get experience by working in a law firm in the capacity of a messenger, file clerk or assistant. A summer internship program can at least be done. This will give you experience and will also give you contacts which will be helpful when you complete your law graduation.

You can also research about the jurisdiction’s bar admittance requirements in the specific jurisdiction area where you wish to practice. You will be required to fulfill these requirements. The professional responsibility exam is required by many of the jurisdictions.

Find Work in Lawyer’s Capacity

You can be a certified lawyer by passing the bar exam and you should take the exam in the immediate summer which occur after your graduation. The nation has high number of attorneys and finding a position can be difficult. You can get the job more easily at the place from where you did your internship from.

Those who study at better law colleges and obtain better grades get more opportunities than their counterparts. The best of the jobs have larger number of candidates aspiring for them. The MNC’s and the large firms recruit only those students who have graduated with high grades. The larger firms also hire the associates that can work for more number of hours and have true dedication for the job.

You can also work as a research attorney or as a clerk with a judge as it is desirable in many cases. You can find the judges being more selective in hiring. You can work as a paralegal if you obtain below average grades.
