It feels wonderful to lend a hand to others but at times you may feel that some people are taking advantage of your generous nature. There are many kinds of people in this world and not all of them are worth putting yourself out for. You can say ‘no’ to someone who is a stranger to you but how do you deal with people who matter to you when they are taking advantage of you? You have to put a stop to this immediately so that you don’t end up getting hurt.
Ways To Stop People Taking Advantage Of You
Learn To Say No
It might be difficult, initially, to say “no” to others as you are programmed to go out of your way to help others but this is something that you have to do. Ask yourself if people whom you help out will be as accommodating when you need something from them. A relationship works two ways- ‘give’ and ‘take’. It should not be all about giving or all about taking.
Ponder Over The Request
The next time someone approaches you for help think don’t agree instantly and give in to the demands of that person. What you should do is to think if you can help the person out without suffering any inconveniences yourself. Tell that person that you will think about their request.
When you are pondering over the request you should not think that you have to help the other person or you will lose their friendship. Agree to do something for others only if they truly need your help and appreciate your generosity.
Don’t Let Anyone Manipulate You
You might often come across people who do not hesitate in trying to make you feel guilty for not helping them out and in this manner manipulating you to do their will. In these circumstances, you have to keep your stand and be firm when you are saying no.
If you relent and agree to help the person you are simply allowing them to bend you to their will. You have to understand that people have become so used to relying on you that they have started taking your help for granted, which has to stop.
Stay Away From Manipulative People
You have to be very careful while selecting your friends. Stay away from people who take advantage of other by pretending to be friends but in reality they are nothing but cheaters, cons and betrayers. Such people do not care about the feelings of others. They only manipulate people to get their own way.
More importantly, you should tell yourself that you have not taken the pledge to dedicate your life in helping others while your own life suffers. You should remember that how other people treat you depends largely on you. No one can take advantage of you until and unless you allow them to. If you don’t have the confidence to lead your life as you want and put your own priorities above others you are giving people the right to treat you as a puppet.
