The Schaffhausen-based International Watch Company, which is better known as IWC, has been designing and producing excellent men’s watches which are quite a rage. Everyone who has an eye for watches will want to own a IWC Pilot watch or a Portuguese 7-day.
Last year new models were added to the Aquatimer and Portuguese Yacht Club series. In 2011, the company has overhauled the Portofino line and the most visible new watch in this collection is the Hand-Wound Eight Days (ref. 5101).
The Portofino collection is known for its class, elegance and simplicity. So, for a while now the Portofino has been IWC’s entry-level timepiece. But this is not true with the latest launch, Hand-Wound Eight Days which has the company’s own caliber 59210 movement. Going by its specification, this new offering will be a sought after wrist watch when it is launched.
IWC prides itself for making quality time measuring devices and this is evident from the classy catalogs it comes out with each year. Earlier IWC used to get the mechanical movement outsourced but not any longer and the new movement, 59210, is a tribute to the exquisitive craftsmanship available inhouse to IWC.
The flagship of the Portofino range isn’t the only watch in the market which has power reserve of eight days (192 hours) and a indicator on the dial showing how much reserve power is left.
But the looks of the watch can’t be mistaken for anything else but IWC. The Hand-Wound Eight Days will be offered in gold and stainless steel with the dial available in myriad colours. The stainless steel gets a silver or black dial and the gold gets a slate-colored one.
The other interesting feature of the watch is the alligator strap it comes with. The strap is manufactured by the famous shoe-manufacturing company Santoni.
They are famous for their colouring and flaming technique which gives the shoe a fine veneer. The same technique is used for the alligator straps which adorn the Portofina. If you wear Santoni shoes the straps will compliment them perfectly.
The case diameter of the watch is 45 mm which might sound a bit large but with its small crown and slender lugs, it will be comfortable for most wrist sizes.
The quality of a mechanical watch depends on its movement. Despite the fact that the caliber 59210 is manufactured by IWC, it is new and has not been tested in real world conditions. But it is based on the large caliber 50000, which is a proven design, and hence the future looks good for the new movement and it is expected to be reliable.
IWC produces a large number of watches but that doesn’t take away from the beautiful finishing and craftsmanship the watches are endowed with. The round case and the beautiful simple dial give the Portofino Hand-Wound Eight Days a classic look which will remain in style for a long time.
