Stroke And Diabetes Diabetes is a metabolic disorder. In this condition your pancreas starts malfunctioning and do not manufacture sufficient amount of insulin for your body. Insulin is a hormone which regulates your blood sugar by carrying glucose present in your body to other cells where glucose is converted into energy.

People mostly suffer from Type 1 Diabetes or Type 2 Diabetes. In case of Type 1 Diabetes, pancreas does not produce insulin whereas in case of Type 2 Diabetes pancreas produce insulin but patient’s body becomes resistant to insulin (also known as insulin resistance).

Women may also suffer from Gestational Diabetes during pregnancy. Patients who suffer from Type 1 Diabetes or Type 2 Diabetes are likely to suffer from stroke if proper care is not taken to control blood sugar level.

A diabetic, who has suffered a stroke, should be very careful while choosing his/her diet otherwise unhealthy diet can worsen the condition.

A diabetic should strictly avoid foods containing fats and trans fats. If you have experienced stroke you should strictly avoid or minimize the consumption of saturated fats. Any food that may increase bad cholesterol should be strictly avoided.

What to Eat


You should consume fresh fruits because they are low in calories and they also increase good cholesterol and reduce bad cholesterol in your system. Diabetics also need fiber to get rid of stomach disorder and to lower bad cholesterol. Fruits play vital role in providing fiber to your body. Plums are very beneficial for diabetes patients. You can also consume lime, lemon, oranges etc. However, avoid ripe mango and banana.


Include fresh vegetables in your diet. Consume green vegetables regularly. They are rich in fiber and vital nutrients such as B vitamins, Vitamin C, Vitamin A, potassium, iron, calcium etc. Eat vegetables such as cabbage, spinach, broccoli, lady’s finger, cauliflower, beans, soy etc.

Whole Grains

Consume whole grains which are not processed or not polished because during processing, whole grains lose most of their vital nutrients. Whole grains contain almost all vital vitamins which your body needs to recover from stroke. This food is also rich in dietary fiber and vital minerals. This food is low in cholesterol and calories and high in nutrients which are very beneficial for diabetes patients.

Oatmeal is very effective in lowering cholesterol and in preventing stroke. It gives you the feeling of fullness and also causes weight loss. It is one of the best foods that a diabetic can consume who has also suffered a stroke. Other beneficial foods are brown rice, whole wheat, barley, popcorn etc.

While eating or cooking these foods, make sure that you don’t add oil in them otherwise their nutritional values will be diminished and oil will increase bad cholesterol in your system.

Lean Protein

Protein is essential for your cells repair and muscle growth. You should eat foods such as beans, soy, dairy products which are low in fats etc. because such foods are rich in protein.

Olive Oil

Cook your foods in olive oil or canola oil instead of other oils which contain high amounts of saturated fats and trans fats. As far as possible, try to eat steamed foods instead of foods fried in oil.
