Sony Xperia E Review

Early in 2012 Sony bought Ericsson’s stake in Sony Ericsson and became Sony Mobile Communications. This resulted in the new range of Sony Xperia phones. The latest addition to this series will be Sony Xperia E.

Sony Xperia E

The phone is in the mid-price range and will compete with the likes of HTC Desire C and Samsung Galaxy Ace S 5830.

Features Of Sony Xperia E

The Xperia E retains the Sony Xperia series trademark look. The phone is stylish like its more expensive cousins and is available in black, pink and white.

Sony has fitted the phone a TFT capacitive touch screen with 256K colors. It has a 320 X 480 pixels resolution on a 3.5 inch screen. The pixel density of the screen comes to stand at 165 pixels per inch, which is moderate and among the industry standard in this range.

However, if you like a more resolution-rich screen, there are more options available in a slightly higher price range. The phone has multi-touch functionality. But the down-side is that it works for only 2 fingers. The screen comes protected with scratch-resistant glass.

Operating System

Xperia E is powered by a Qualcomm MSM7227A Snapdragon chipset with a 1GHz Cortex-A5 processor unit. The chipset, CPU and GPU are backed by 4GB internal memory. 50% of which are available for user use. The memory can be expanded till 32GB with the MicorSD slot. A 512MB RAM supports the glamorous Android OS, v4.1 Jelly Bean.

Operating System

Like other Xperia phones, Timescape UI can be found in Xperia E as well. The battery performance however, is not as strong as desired. It has a 1530mAh battery. In stand-by mode the phone holds on till 530 hours, while offers only 6h and 12 minutes on 2G and 6h and 18 minutes on 3G. Both are significantly less than other contemporary in the same price range.

The connectivity options available with the Xperia E are not ground-shaking. These are a part of standard issue in a contemporary Smartphone. It supports GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA – 7.2 Mbps, 5.6 Mbps, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi hotspot and Bluetooth v2.1, EDR.

We believe that this is where Xperia E might lack than the other phones in the segment. Most other phones will have a 5 Megapixel camera with Autofocus and LED flash.

But sadly, Xperia carries only a 3.15 Megapixel camera with 2048 X 1536 pixels and Autofocus and FWVGA video recording facilities. There is no LED flash. This is kind of a let down from the Sony Xperia as other phones in the range will have better specifications and performance.

The Xperia E has a noise cancellation feature which prompts amazing on-call sound quality. This is supposedly where Xperia makes up for the lack in the prior segment. Xperia E comes with the WALKMAN application with xLOUD technology and 3D surround sound features. The phone boasts of superior audio expression and terrific sound quality. It is an added advantage that it also comes with a manual equalizer to customize the sound effects as desired.

Price Of Sony Xperia E

This Sony Xperia E is supposed to be launched in early 2013 and should be priced around $250 in US and INR 13,000 in India. With the kind of specifications Xperia E has, there are and will be better phones to choose from, in the same price range. However those with an obsessive ear for good music; may feel attracted to this phone.
